- Author's Note, Speak
She acts as a hero of sorts, this Laurie Halse Anderson. Her accolades are many, including the Margaret A. Edwards Award, but her first book Speak is perhaps the most important of her career. For someone like Anderson it seems obvious that the love she shares for her reader, the respect, the hope, all come together as an incredibly powerful sign of courage. After all, it does take huge amounts of courage to write a novel that speaks on issues many would prefer be kept hush-hush.
Laurie Halse Anderson might just be one of the greatest examples of what it means to truly speak. Because she wrote a controversial novel in 1999 that still stands today as an incredibly vital story to share with everyone, Laurie Halse Anderson embodies the very spirit of the novel she so courageously penned. She spoke then and she continues to speak today.
Anderson is also the author of several children's books and of the following young adult novels:
Laurie Halse Anderson currently lives with her family in upstate New York.
(Penguin Group, 1999)
