Assessment of Need
Why do we need a book like Speak in the classroom? Well, the answer is simple: it creates a feeling of safety. This might seem strange, since some of the topics are a bit scary, but by allowing this novel in the classroom, the reader gets a sense of feeling like whatever has happened to them or might happen to them, is okay to talk about.
In the Statement of Rationale, I shared a personal narrative on the novel Speak. Therefore, I speak directly as a student has been impacted by this novel and I speak honestly of its need and its place in the classroom.
Throughout this project, I have included ways to make Speak a supplemental novel in accordance with studying the classic literature of The Scarlet Letter. However, this novel could also be utilized in a health class and could, therefore, address an entirely different set of core standards. The novel could also just be taught by itself, if time allots simply because it is an imperative tale, vital to literature for adolescents.
The need for this novel arises from the realities it details. It presents the information in a way that is totally easy to understand and to relate to. It is impactful and a story that students won't soon forget. It is the hope of the novel that the cycle breaks and the first step is making sure stories like this are told and open for class discussion.
