To build upon the original Hester Prynne, why not take a look at Emma Stone's portrayal as Olive Penderghast in the updated version of The Scarlet Letter in Easy A. Consider the reasons why Olive lies about her sexual past. Why would Olive trash her own reputation? How are Olive and Melinda alike? So sure, Melinda couldn't speak at all and Olive had plenty to say and a web-blog to prove it, but what makes them different? Why was it was so easy for Olive to lie about her past, but so hard for Melinda to tell the truth about hers?
